FIRST AND SECOND-YEAR ADVISING 1. Most students will have advisors who are the teachers of First-Year Seminars. The deans of students and deans of faculty will identify approximately four faculty as advisors of those students not enrolled in a First-Year Seminar. The deans will seek to choose faculty teaching introductory courses. 2. If a student transfers from one FYS to another during the first two weeks of class, the new FYS teacher will become the student’s academic advisor. If a student drops a FYS, but does not enroll in a different one, the student will be asked whether he or she would like to have the FYS teacher remain as the student’s advisor, or be assigned someone new. The deans of students will arrange the transfer of advisee folders to the appropriate faculty member, and communicate the information to the Office of the Registrar. 3. If a student in a FYS and/or the faculty member want a new advisor assigned, either may discuss this issue with one of the deans of students or the deans of faculty. The deans of students will choose a new advisor from among the faculty advising students not in a First-Year Seminar. 4. When a faculty member with first-year or sophomore advisees goes on a leave of one semester or longer, the deans of students will transfer those advisees to another faculty member. Those faculty members will be chosen from among faculty who have not recently taught a FYS or advised first and second-year students. The deans of faculty and students will maintain the list of such faculty. 5. The deans of faculty will take responsibility for communicating with the deans of students about those faculty taking leaves. The deans of students will communicate with affected students, telling them the names of their new advisors. The deans of students will also communicate with the Office of the Registrar, so that access to records can be changed appropriately. MAJOR ADVISING 1. When a faculty member takes a leave for one semester or longer, the chair of the department or program will either serve as the major advisor for that faculty member’s major advisees, or will designate other members of the department or program to do so. 2. The deans of faculty will take responsibility for communicating with the deans of students about those faculty taking leaves. The deans of students will communicate with affected students, telling them that they should see the chair of their department or program for information about their new advisors. 3. The deans of students will also communicate with the Office of the Registrar, so that access to records can be changed appropriately. 4. The deans of faculty will ask chairs to arrange the movement of advisee folders to the appropriate department or program member. |
