The Hoffman Research Support Grants supports up to $1,000 for Summer Research. Deadline for Submission: March 17, 2008. The Hoffman Research Support Grants (formerly Hoffman-Mellon Grants) offer support for students in all disciplines engaged in research for four to ten weeks during the summer. Hoffman Research Support Grants can be used to support a short-or long-term summer research project in any discipline. They can be used as supplementary awards, providing the opportunity for students to remain on campus because the grant can cover room-and-board expenses. This award may be used in conjunction with other sources of support (faculty grants, work study, etc.), but such primary support is not required. Hoffman Research Support Grants may be used with some other research and service-learning grants and career internships as well, if those endeavors relate directly to a student's academic program. Hoffman Research Support Grants may be used to support student-faculty research or independent student research conducted under the direction of a faculty member. Students conducting fieldwork away from the campus may also apply for a Hoffman Research Support Grant. Eighteen to twenty-two Hoffman Research Support Grants. Students awarded Hoffman Research Support Grants receive up to $1,000 in taxable support, paid through the Bates payroll system. This grant supports 100 hours at $10.00 per hour which may be spread over the summer or be for a full-time position of 40 hours for 2.5 weeks. To apply: First-year students, sophomores, and juniors working in all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Application forms are available from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty (121 Lane Hall) or online at www.bates.edu/Prebuilt/Hoffman-Research-Application.pdf. The application must include a one-paragraph abstract, a narrative of two pages or less (double-spaced) that includes a description of the research project and a timetable for the project. PLEASE submit your ORIGINAL PAPERWORK AND 5 COPIES of the APPLICATION FORM AND 4 COPIES of the ENTIRE PROPOSAL for a TOTAL of 5 COMPLETE PACKETS. A letter of recommendation from the research advisor must accompany the application. If the research is to be conducted at another institution, a letter of support from that institution as well as a letter of recommendation from a Bates faculty member must be secured and attached to the application. Letters of support may be submitted directly to the Dean of the Faculty's Office via email (kobrien@bates.edu). More Important Information
