This summer was one of the best experiences I have ever had, both professionally and personally." - Intern, '99 "In today’s competitive job market, where previous work experience is critical, my eight weeks spent as a Ladd intern reaffirmed my aspirations to pursue a career in investment banking and have me well prepared for my interview process next year." - Intern '05 The Ladd Internship Program was started in 1978 and funded in part by George E. Ladd, Jr., a benefactor of Bates College. Mr. Ladd was interested in exposing liberal arts students to the working world and helped fund these internships for that purpose.Currently the Ladd program is sponsored by the Office of Career Services and made possible by a gift from the George and Helen Ladd Charitable Corporation.
The program is open to sophomores and juniors of all majors. This past year, 12 organizations sponsored a total of 14 interns from Bates. Sponsoring companies provide internship descriptions, and any qualifications they wish to establish by early January. Employers must be able to guarantee that the intern will be employed in some meaningful way within the organization. In January, the OCS holds an informational session for all interested students. Students are asked to submit two resumes and two cover letters for every internship they apply for. The OCS sends the resumes to the appropriate sponsors who then select their final candidate. Usually personal or phone interviews are held. Final decisions by the sponsor need to be communicated to the College and to the students by early April so that students have time to make arrangements for summer housing, etc. |
