DESIRE - Film by Julie Gustafson and the Teenage Girls' Documentary Project - Today, March 30, 7:00 p.m.- Olin 104 - A Panel Discussion with director Julie Gustafson and filmmakers Kimeca Rodgers and Tiffanie Johson will follow the screening.  Nearly a decade in the making, this film documents the challenges and desires of a group of young women in New Orleans by letting them film their own stories. As this diverse group of young women—two teenagers from the Desire housing projects, a single mother from the working-class suburb of Belle Chase across the river, and two girls from the most prestigious private high school in New Orleans—make short films about their own desires, this  film records the intimate dramas of their changing lives.  Sponsored By: Art and Visual Culture Department, Women and Gender Studies Program, Psychology Department

LECTURE:  Today, March 30th at 7:00 pm in Pettengill G50. DAVID FOSTER, Regent's Professor of Spanish, Women's Studies and Interdisciplinary Humanities at Arizona State University will give a talk on "Women and Film in Latin America." The talk is sponsored by the Dept. of Romance Languages and Literatures, the Divisional Chair of Humanities, College Lecture Committee and the NEH Program Fund with additional support from the Department of History and Women and Gender Studies.

PHILLIPS FELLOWS PRESENTATION: Today, March 30th, 7:30 pm – Hirasawa Lounge. Jacob Bluestone ’07:Miradas Inocentes: Innocent Looks. Mr. Bluestone will share his experience in Bolivia where he worked closely with disadvantaged children teaching them photography and athletics. Come “open your eyes” and see Bolivia through the eyes of its children. All are welcome; refreshments will be served. Also remember to stop by Chase Hall Gallery to see more of Mr. Bluestone’s photography work with students but this time through the eyes of five Poland Regional High School students. FORSAN HUSSEIN, an expert on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will give a talk concerning the conflict and ways of trying to make peace. Today, March 30 at 8 pm in 204 Carnegie Hall.

Upcoming events and announcements

WHY UPGRADE EMAIL?  Behind the scenes, the upgrade will include new five servers for receiving, processing and storing e-mail, new server software that will manage messages more efficiently and a new version of Webmail.  Three features of the new Webmail that students can utilize after April 18 are: Access to the complete Bates e-mail directory (LDAP) for use when entering names in the ‘To’ fields.  By simply typing the beginning letters of an individual’s first name, last name or e-mail account name you will see all the matching user names.  Vacation and forward messages can easily be created in Webmail. Filters set in Webmail will actually filter mail that will be read in Webmail or other e-mail programs.  You’ll only have to set your filters in Webmail.  Details on these features can be seen at http://www.bates.edu/emailchanges in the Helpsheets and FAQ sections. If you have any questions on the e-mail upgrade, please contact Help Desk Services at 207-786-8222.

Five $20 Gift Certificates - Horny Toad, Patagonia, North Face and two for LL Bean - This Saturday is the final bus trip of the semester, and once again the bus will be heading to FREEPORT.  It is supposed to be a nice day on Saturday, so why not take a few hours to do a little shopping.  As a way of saying thank you for all of your support this semester the Student Activities Office will be giving away five $20 gift certificates to the Freeport bus riders.  All you have to do to win is sign up for the bus, and then hop on the bus on Saturday - pretty simple, huh?  The bus leaves from in front of Chase Hall at 12 noon, and will be back to campus by 5 pm.  To sign up stop by the Student Activities Office in Chase Hall.  We will be offering several trips during Short Term, so keep an eye out for further information.

GRASS FIELDS: looking for an area to enjoy the warm sunshine?  Please use the following areas on campus:  Page field, Rand field, Bardwell Field, and the Bill field.  These areas are available for general student use during the rest of Winter Semester.  Please wear sneakers - NO CLEATS!   The baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields are NOT in condition to be used at this time.  Thank you for your cooperation!
