BROWN BAG LUNCH - Today, May 5, 2006, 11 am to 12 pm - Women's Resource Center, 45 Campus Avenue on "Gender Segregation at Bates in the 1960's" by Alison Vander Zanden, class of 2006.  Come to an informal talk and discussion of gender segregation at Bates in the 1960's.  Alison's research was done as part of a class, Sociology of Gender, and focuses on the Bates Blue Books and student government publications.  Lunch will be provided (including vegetarian lunches) and all are welcome!

BLOOD DRIVE!   Bates EMS will be hosting a two day Blood Drive on Monday, May 8th and Tuesday, May 9th from 3-8pm in Chase Hall Lounge.  Only 5% of the eligible US population donates blood in any given year.  Donors are the ONLY source of blood.  To make an appointment- Blood drive tabling will occur on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 12-1pm and 5:45-6:45pm.  If you are unable to make an appointment via tabling, please send an e-mail to Jason Buxbaum (jbuxbaum@bates.edu) to schedule an appointment.  There will be a $25 gas card raffle for each day!  Someone needs blood EVERY 2 SECONDS.  One donation of blood saves three lives!  GIVE BLOOD, GIVE LIFE.  See you there.

DO YOU LOVE SOCCER!  Do you want to hear of a program to help children with HIV prevention? -  Today, May 5, at 4 pm in Pettengill G65, Nick Colacchio, Middlebury College '05, is speaking about his work FOR KICKAIDS AND GRASSROOT SOCCER.ORG.   Nick was a studio art major and pre-medical student, as well as captain of the soccer team.  He will discuss Grassroot Soccer, a non-profit organization that trains professional soccer players, peer educators, and other powerful role models to deliver HIV prevention messages to children in Africa. KickAIDS is Grassroot Soccer's US-based awareness and fundraising campaign that gives US students the opportunity to learn more about the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, and encourages involvement in the solution.   Please join this Friday to learn more as on how you can get involved with Grassroot Soccer's fight against the spread of HIV in the world.

Tonight, May 5th, is First Friday in the OLD PORT, and the Student Activities Office is providing a free bus.  The bus will leave from in front of Chase Hall at 5 pm, and will leave from the Old Port at 11 pm.  Friday is supposed to be nice day - certainly better than today, so why not go to Portland to check out some great art, restaurants and general fun.  Come to the Student Activities Office in Chase Hall to sign up.  fmi: http://www.firstfridayartwalk.com/

The Student Activities Office is offering another great trip - Saturday, May 13th, for an exciting day of WHITEWATER RAFTING ON THE DEAD RIVER.  This is the final high water release day, so there should be about 7000 cfs of water surging down the river.  This makes for an exhilarating day of rafting, and with the leaves beginning to change colors a beautiful view all along the route.  Faculty, Students, Staff and families are welcome to come for this great trip.  This all inclusive trip is only $60.  This great price includes round trip transportation on a luxury coach bus, rafting, a wet suit, a personal flotation device, snacks on the river, dinner after rafting, and a free video and slide show after dinner.  The bus will be leaving at 6:15 on Saturday morning, and will be back to campus by about 8:30 that night.  Free snacks will be provided on the bus in the morning as well. 6:00 pm  COLLEGE SHUTTLE - The shuttle runs on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 pm - 12 am, and Sunday from 12 pm - 6 pm.  The shuttle runs to Auburn locations at the beginning of each hour, and runs to Lewiston locations on the half hour.
