Advising for Sophomores
Some of the most important decisions that you will make during your sophomore year are choosing a Major, a Minor, and General Education Concentrations. Thinking deeply about your options and planning with others is essential. The decisions and navigating the process can seem complex, but lots of people are here to help.
Connect with a faculty member or the chair in your prospective Major. Plan your schedule with your first-year advisor from last year or a possible advisor in your Major. Make an appointment with the Sophomore Dean, Carl Steidel, in the Office of the Dean of Students to talk and plan. Talk with juniors and seniors in the Major. And don’t forget coaches and other staff who are looking out for your best interest. Think about what you want to do; talk with people who know. Start early. Connect!
How To Declare Your Major Plus Two
To register in March of your sophomore year, you must declare your “Major Plus Two” (majors, minors, & GECs) no later than March 1. Clink the links to learn more about how to declare a major, a minor, or a General Education Concentration (GEC). To see how far along you are with your requirements, go to the General Educational Evaluation system on the Garnet Gateway.
When to declare: It is never too early to declare a major, minor, or General Education Concentration, so declare as soon as you are ready, even in your first year. It’s never too early, but it can be too late! Here are the deadlines for declaring:
- If you plan to study abroad during your junior year, you must complete the declaration processes by February 1 of your sophomore year. Meeting this deadline means that you need to begin the process in early January so that your major advisor, minor advisor, and respective Chairs can perform key steps in the declaration process before February 1.
- If you plan to stay at Bates during your junior year, you must complete the declaration processes by March 1. Meeting this deadline means that you need to begin the process by February 1 so that your major advisor, minor advisor, and respective Chairs can perform key steps in the declaration process before March 1.
