MANIC OPTIMISTS: What do you get when you put 13 guys who love to sing alone with a piano? You’ll have to see for yourself to find out, but we’re pretty sure you’ll be manically optimistic about it! The Manic Optimists are Bates’ newest all-male a cappella group, performing a wide variety of current hits and classic favorites. We perform constantly throughout the year, at Bates, at other schools, and anywhere else they’ll have us, from the Boston Common to Sugarloaf ski resort and beyond! So what do you say? Do you have what it takes to be a ManOp? Audition this fall and find out!  Contact: Grady Hogan ghogan@bates.edu

MASTERPIECE THEATRE CLUB is devoted to PBS Masterpiece Theatre programming, which airs BBC period dramas on American television.  This is a club where students can come see their favorite Victorian novel or Shakespearean play brought to life.  Students can gather and celebrate period dramas they already know and love, as well as marvel at new adaptations.  The Masterpiece Theatre Club presents a formidable combination; it is the opportunity to take a break in the workday, while at the same time stimulating the mind by broadening exposure to classic works of literature, their themes, and their historical context through film. Contact: Samantha Rothberg srothber@bates.edu

Established in 1958, MERIMANDERS  are the oldest (and only) all-female a cappella group at Bates College. In addition to singing at various Bates events and holding our own concerts each semester, we sometimes get together with groups from other schools by either inviting them to sing with us or going to sing with them. We love to travel to different places in the Maine/New England community to sing! We sing at restaurants, fundraisers, parties, and many other awesome venues. Tryouts are held at the beginning of each academic year. Come audition, we’d love to hear you sing! Contact: Danielle Traverse dtravers@bates.edu

MOCK TRIAL TEAM: Our four year old team is both competitive, and a lot of fun.  We spend a few months preparing a trial, including writing opening and closing statements, and direct and cross-examinations.  We annually attend the regional competitive tournament, where we compete against other New England colleges and universities.  Last year, we were only one win from moving on to the national competition. Mock Trial presents a great experience to bond with a group of Batesies, while engaging in a challenging and extremely fun activity. If you’re interested in law, public speaking, or acting, then Mock Trial is a great place to hone those skills. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be, and it doesn’t even really help to be, a politics major or pre-law. No experience is necessary to join! Contact: Evan Binder ebinder@bates.edu

What is Model UN? MODEL UNITED NATIONS (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. I still did not get what Model UN is? Model UN is a great opportunity for you to practice your speaking and lobbying skills, make new friends both on and out of campus and simply have a ton of fun while learning more about the current issues pressing the international community. More so: you basically get to be a UN Diplomat for a weekend!! How awesome is that?! Model UN at Bates? The current Model UN club is a young one: it’s “date of birth” being the fall semester of the 2008-2009 academic year. During this first year we participated in the Harvard National Model UN conference. As an expanding club we plan on participating in at least two conferences next year and organize an event on campus. So we need a lot of support. Conclusion: No matter what your experience is you are always more than welcome to join us in our meetings and have a good time. Contact: Karl Fisher kfisher@bates.edu

However, this is not a self-defense club; the techniques we learn here are used to put on a safe show for an audience so don’t come down expecting to learn how to fend off an attacker with a weapon. The Bates YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS CLUB provides a creatively stimulating atmosphere for students to come together and discuss entrepreneurship.  It is an informal environment geared toward bouncing ideas off each other in regards to what a successful start up would look like, primarily within the framework of a college campus.  In addition, we also congregate once a week in order to help educate each other about what the raw fundamental components are that make up the entrepreneurial lifestyle.  Being an entrepreneur is about fostering healthy relationships with people and coming together to fuse ideas.  This is precisely what we do on a weekly basis during our meetings.  We are a team of driven individuals that think creatively about what we can do to ultimately change the world around us for the better in order to enrich the lives of people who surround us.  The goal for the 2012/2013 academic year is to not only produce successful start ups/ventures, but to also bring guest speakers in and educate us and the students of Bates College what entrepreneurs actually do.  The second function of our club is acting as somewhat of a venture capital firm.  In other words, students not affiliated with our club may bring their start up ideas forth in hope for financial backing.  This has happened in the past and has proven to be quite successful with the proper analysis which is executed by club members.  Contact: Matt Ross mross2@bates.edu

Bates YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLUB provides a converging point for Batesies with an entrepreneurial spirit to drive social change. The club seeks to serve as a ground for exchange of innovative ideas as well as a resource for effective implementation by building a network, providing preliminary assistance, and fostering a constructive peer-to-peer exchange on project ideas. We meet to discuss community building projects, their implementation, technical know-how and provide intellectual assistance. Our goals are centered on identifying social problems and coming up with innovative ideas to counteract them. We believe in a sustainable model of development that transcends beyond charitable efforts in order to create a cycle of success in the communities that we go into. Bates prides itself in creating future leaders and we want to strengthen that legacy by paving the way for these social innovators. Contact: Mohammed Mustafa Basig-Rasikh mbasijra@bates.edu
