Adding a Network Printer to Windows XP / Vista Computer

A. To remove a printer:

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click on Printers and Faxes (or open Control Panel, then printers and faxes folder)
  3. Right click on the printer you would like to remove
  4. Choose delete
  5. Click yes to "are you sure you want to delete..."

B. To add a new network printer:

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Select Run
  3. In Run type the name of the server on which the printer is located, normally either \\lincoln [administrative] or \\canton [academic] then click OK.

    NOTE: It is sometimes necessary to enter the complete path in order to see the list of printers, i.e.   \\canton.bates.edu Then login with BCIS\username and password if connecting via CCAA.


  4. Select a printer that is most conveniently located.
  5. Printers are listed by building and floor
  6. Double click on the printer you wish to install
  7. After it finishes "connecting"...
  8. Close any open windows and then repeat the steps to add any other printers you want.


 

C. To setup your default printer:

  1. Return to the list of printers, by clicking on Start and then on Printers and Faxes.
  2. To set a preferred printer right click on the printer of your choice from the list.
  3. Select Set as Default Printer.
  4. A small checkmark will appear in the upper right corner of the printer.
