Please join us for an informational Open House as you begin your college search.

Discover Bates is an Open House program for high school juniors and their families to learn about Bates. It is an opportunity for students and families to get an early start on the college search. The program includes an Admission & Financial Aid presentation, student and faculty panels, a campus tour and lunch in the Bates Dining Commons.

During the day you will:

LEARN about what Bates has to offer and what it means to “be a Batesie.”

ASK questions of staff, faculty and current students to discover if Bates is a great fit for you.

EXPLORE the Bates community. Attend a panel, have lunch with current students, check out an art exhibit.

CONNECT with Bates and begin to build a unique relationship with students, faculty, administrators, staff and the Lewiston-Auburn community.

The Bates College Office of Admission will participate in a Council of International Schools recruitment trip to Asia from Sept. 10 to 30, 2012.

Karen Kothe, associate dean of admission

Karen Kothe, associate dean of admission, will represent Bates on the tour. A 20-year veteran in the Bates Office of Admission and an ardent advocate for the liberal arts, Kothe embraces the opportunity to speak about this form of American higher education to students and parents in Asia.

Kothe has a wealth of international experience. While in college and soon after, she lived in Paris and Chartres, France, for two years. She continues to visit and research many 11th- and 12th-century European churches, especially in France and Italy. For the past decade she has researched “Saint Francis of Assisi, Uncle Tom and the Idea of Transcendence” in an effort to renew American interest in this American icon from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel. In 2008, she studied with renowned Franciscan scholar William Cook through a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar offered to college professors in Rome, Siena and Assisi.

Kothe and the CIS tour will make stops in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kaohsiung, Manila, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Suzhou andTaipei.

Kothe will travel with representatives from 28 other universities and colleges, including Clark University, Connecticut College, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, Michigan State University, The Pennsylvannia State University, Purdue University, Randolph College, Rollins College, St. John’s University and the University of California, Davis.
