Books For Africa. A simple name for an organization with a simple mission. We collect, sort, ship, and distribute books to children in Africa. Our goal: to end the book famine in Africa. Books For Africa is the world’s largest shipper of donated books to the African continent. Since 1988, Books For Africa has shipped over 24 million high-quality text and library books to children and adults in 45 African countries. Millions more are needed. It costs $9,800 to send a sea container to most major sea ports of books and computers to Africa. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is the largest and busiest pantry in Dane County, serving nearly 22,000 households in 2009. This pantry has adopted a customer-choice model of distribution - operating more like a grocery store. The goal of this model is to honor the dignity and ethnic diversity of the people served by the pantry as well as to minimize waste and promote efficient distribution of charitable resources. Volunteers will help by stocking shelves with food donations and acting as hosts to welcome families and individuals to the pantry. Hosts will also accompany customers through the pantry and assist with food selections and checkout.
