Karen Melvin teaches a range of courses about the history of Latin American and the history of the early modern world. In addition to a survey of Latin American history that covers from the encounters of 1492 to the present, she offers courses on Latin American cities, the Independence era in Latin America, the Mexican Revolution, The Spanish Inquisition, and a history of travel and tourism in Latin America. She likes to incorporate material culture, art, and novels into her classes.

Her book, Building Colonial Cities of God, examines the creation of urban religious culture in colonial Mexico. Her current research project tracks seventeenth-century alms giving in the Americas for charitable works in North Africa and Jerusalem.
