Rob Stockwell was named the NESCAC Player of the Week and the UMass Boston Tournament MVP after leading Bates to wins over the University of Southern Maine, John Jay and UMass Boston.Stockwell ’07 (Temple, N.H.) scored a career high 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 77-62 win over USM on Tuesady, then recorded his second consecutive double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds in a win over John Jay Friday. Stockwell then scored 23 points in the UMass Boston tournament championship, shooting 10-for-15 from the floor to lead Bates over the host Beacons.
Stockwell hit 57.4 percent of his shots from the field on the week, and Bates takes a 5-0 record into Thursday night’s game vs. Colby-Bates-Bowdoin rival Bowdoin.
|Olivia Zurek ’05
Olivia Zurek became the 13th member of the 1000-point club for the Bates women’s basketball team, scoring 10 points, grabbing six rebounds and taking six steals to lead Bates to a 61-37 rout over the University of Southern Maine.USM entered the game ranked second nationally, and the win was the first for Bates over the Huskies since Jan. 22, 1997.
Zurek ’05 (Arlington, Mass.) is currenlty one rebound behind Kate McLaughlin ’01 on the all-time list, and could become the all-time leader later this season.
Bates faces Husson on Wednesday before playing in the St. Joseph’s tournament this weekend in Standish.
