Cross Country opens up season with a win

Senior Dan Johnson (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes) was the top individual finisher at the four-team Amherst Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Four Bates runners finished in the top 10 as the team opened the season with a victory.

Johnson finished the eight kilometer course in 26:32.6, 27 seconds ahead of the Amherst runner up. Matt Biggart (Chesire, Conn./Avon Old Farms), Matthew Dunlap (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Christopher Murray (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) finished fourth, sixth, and ninth respectively for the Bobcats.

Bates finished with 26 points, eight ahead of host Amherst. Merrimack College was third with 90 points and Wheaton College was fourth with 97 points.

For the Bates women, Kathryn Moore (Pelham, N.H./Phillips Andover), Hannah Giasson (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and Aviva Goldstein (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) finished eighth, ninth and tenth respectively to lead Bates to an impressive second place finish under first year Head Coach Jay Hartshorn.

Amherst won the competition with 19 points followed by Bates with 55 points. Springfield finished third with 89 points, Wheaton was fourth with 93 points and Merrimack College finished fifth with 145.

Bates willcontinue their season on Saturday, September 24 at the Tufts Invitational in Medford, MA.
