Women’s tennis opens up season with big victory over USM

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bates College women’s tennis team got the 2005-06 season started with a dominating performance, defeating the University of Southern Maine 9-0 on Thursday.

Freshman Cristina Chow (Carolina, Puerto Rico/St. John’s School) defeated Katie Welch (Calais, Maine/Calais), a tough NESCAC competitor, in first singles (6-3, 6-1). 

Liz Currie (Yarmouth, Maine/Waynflete) defeated Emily Green (Cumberland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) in scores of 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles, while at number three singles Caryn Benisch (Huntington, N.Y.) won by scores of 6-2, 6-0 over Casea Parady (Portland, Maine/Portland)

Chow and Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, P.A/George) and Currie and Benisch won first and second doubles in scores of  8-2 and 8-1 respectively.

“Cristina  and Cecilia are the top doubkes team and looked solid as well as the number two doubles team,  Liz and Caryn. I’m definitely excited about doubles this season,” commented Head Coach Paul Gastonguay after the game.

“I have to also compliment Katie Walsh who is a tough competitor and has pushed a lot of kids in NESCAC ,but Cristina beat her in straight sets tonight showing her competitive side,”

The Bobcats will play at Middlebury on September 18 for a 1 p.m. start.
