Field hockey team dominates Husson, 5-0
LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College field hockey team registered its most complete victory of the season Wednesday evening at Campus Avenue Field, shutting out Husson College 5-0 in a non-league game.
A trio of Bates forwards led the Bobcats’ highest scoring output of the season with a goal and an assist apiece — Brooke Anable (Holderness, N.H.), junior Carolyn King (Hanover, Mass.) and first-year Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.). Senior goalkeeper Sarah Judice (Granby, Conn.) earned the Bobcats’ first shutout of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Bocchino (Vassalboro, Maine) stopped five shots for Husson (3-5), as the Bobcats outshot the Eagles by a 29-3 margin. Judice had one save for Bates.
“It’s not the first time this season I’ve felt we dominated play,” said Bates head coach Wynn Hohlt, “but it’s the first time we’ve converted that into scoring on multiple occasions. We created a lot of opportunities with sharp passing combinations.”
Bates got on the scoreboard with 13:11 to play in the first half, as sophomore Erin Chandler (Thornton, Pa.) found the net on a feed from sophomore Caitlin Tamposi (Temple, N.H.) in the corner. Just 22 seconds later, Anable wove past two defenders on the right wing and dished to King for a quick 2-0 lead that prompted Husson head coach Sharon Tracy to call timeout.
A pair of goals by Anable and Childs 10 and 20 minutes into the second half, respectively, put the game out of reach. First-year Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) finished off the scoring with under two minutes to play, as the beneficiary of a breakaway run and assist by Childs.
Bates (3-4, 1-3 NESCAC) returns to league play with a game at Williams College on Saturday at noon.
