Golf team captures Bates’ first USM Scramble title

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Bates College golf team posted a score of 14 under par 56 to win the annual five-man USM Scramble Friday afternoon at Sable Oaks Golf Club. This is the Bobcats’ first victory in this event.

The Bates golfers, playing the “best ball” format, scored a six under par 30 on the front nine, and followed that with a blistering eight under par 26 on the back nine.

The five man team was comprised of senior captain Nate Purinton (Toledo, Ohio), senior Sam Haaz (Flourtown, Pa.), junior Chris Foster (Scarsdale, N.Y.), sophomore Jake Cox (Sammamish, Wash.), and sophomore Alex Jacobson (Newton, Mass.).

The tournament’s host, the University of Southern Maine, tied with Saint Joseph’s for second place with a score of 60. University of New England placed third with a 61, followed by Thomas College’s 62 and the University of Maine at Farmington with a 63.

The Bobcats ride their momentum into their final competition of the 2005 season Oct. 17-18, at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships in Brewster, Mass.
