Bates wins four out of eight races at CBB Regatta

OAKLAND, Maine — Bates College placed four winners in eight races at Saturday’s annual Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) Regatta, held on Colby’s 2.5-mile course at Messalonskee Lake.

Bates finished its fall season in terrific form. In particular, the Bates men showed exceptionally well, rowing away with three of the four events run in the men’s division. Colby pulled ahead in three of the races overall while Bowdoin snatched one.

Bates’ men’s varsity eight took home first place with a time of 12:52, four seconds ahead of Colby’s A crew, to highlight Bates’ day. Matt Rivier-Platt ’07, Eugene Kim ’08, Dylan Eberle ’08, Jon Blanchard ’08, Tim Austin ’06, Drew Hagstrum ’08, Nate Hubbell ’06, Colin Hollister ’09, and coxswain Christian Ford ’08 edged Colby by four seconds.  The result was an impressive show of team depth with four members of the lineup being put in after the Head of the Charles.

Other Bates winners included the men’s freshman eight A crew, which defeated second-place Colby by 43 seconds in a time of 13:33; the Bates men’s freshman 4, which outpaced second-place Bowdoin by 1 minute and 20 seconds, in 14:31; and the women’s freshman 4, which edged Bowdoin’s A four by four seconds, in a time of 18:16.

Bates’ women’s varsity 8 A crew finished second to Colby A in 14:33, 21 seconds behind, while the B varsity 8 tied for fourth with Bowdoin, in 15:22.  The women’s varsity of Megan Germscheid ’06, Catherine Cluett ’08, Emily Howeison ’08, Laura French ’07, Colleen Hanlon-Smith ’08, Laura Director ’08, Hallie Preston ’06, Emily Hoffer ’06, and coxswain Katie Nolan ’06 rowed an gutsy race against a sound and seasoned crew from Colby.  The Bates second crew of Laura Clarkson ’07, Kara Constantine ’08, Allison Dupre ’08, Julia Sleeper ’08, Whitney Thomas ’08, Caitlin Murphy ’09, Emily Chandler ’09, Kate Harmsworth-Morrisey ’08, and coxswain Chloe Tennyson tied for fourth only eight seconds off the Colby 2V.

In an impressive showing, the Bates freshman/novice crew of Matt Martone ’09, Charlie Biddle ’09, Tim Henderson ’09, Brian Quarrier ’09, and coxswain Tatum Fraites ’09 won the Men’s F/N 4+ by 2:20 over Bowdoin.  On the women’s side Courtney Stachowski ’09 Rachel Kaplan ’09, Laura Hubbell ’09, Eliza O’Neil ’09, and coxswain Charlotte Coulter ’09 also came away with a victory, four seconds ahead of second place Bowdoin.

Bates’ men’s varsity 4 placed fourth out of six boats, while the women’s varsity 4 was also fourth out of six, just two seconds behind Dalhousie University of Nova Scotia, in 16:45.  The men’s crew boated as Matt Boller ’08, Brad Sherman ’08 Graham Proud ’08, and coxswain Christian Ford ’08 while the women lined up at Hallie Preston ’06, Laura Director ’08, Julia Sleeper ’08, Emily Hoffer ’06, and coxswain Katie Nolan ’06.

The day started with the first-year crews. Bates fielded two crews each in the men’s and women’s divisions. 

The men’s event was dominated by the Bobcats’ first crew of  Andrew Goldstein ’09, Matt Morgan ’09, Bill Walsh ’09, Sam Werbel-Sanborne ’09, Matt Martone ’09, Charlie Biddle ’09, Tim Henderson ’09, Brian Quarrier ’09, and coxswain Tatum Fraites ’09 with a 43-second margin over Colby.  Bates’  second crew of Ben Linder ’09, Eric Armstrong ’09, Ryan Dean ’09, Sam Milstein ’09, Justin HoShue ’09, Richard Urisko ’09, Jonathan Stange ’08, Christopher Warner ’09, and coxswain Katie Cohen was third. 

In the women’s division, the Bates first crew of Courtney Stachowski ’09, Christina Knobel ’09, Maggie Gross ’09, Eliza O’Neil ’09, Rachel Kaplan ’09, Caitlin Murphy ’09, Laura Hubbell ’09, Emily Chandler ’09, and coxswain Chloe Tennyson ’09 struggled with their course, which added precious time to their race. This proved to be the difference as the crew from Colby squeaked out a two-second victory.  Bates second crew boated as Kelly Phillip ’09, Priya Brandes ’09, Gabriella Vannoni ’09, Briyana Belanger ’09, Jen Marlowe ’09, Laura Baughman ’09, Emma Weisser ’09, Sarah Jordan ’09, and coxswain Charlotte Coulter.

The CBB Regatta concludes the fall season for Bates crew.
