Johnson leads Bates men’s cross country team at NESCAC Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Bates College senior Dan Johnson (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) finished fifth overall and earned All-NESCAC First Team honors, leading the Bates men’s cross country team to ninth place at the NESCAC Championships Saturday at Wesleyan University.

With 194 points, the Bobcats finished ahead of Colby (218) and Hamilton (333), and were edged by Amherst (175).

Johnson finished the 8-kilometer course in 25:29.4, a second behind Tufts’ Matt Lacey and 20 seconds behind top finisher Neal Holtschulte of Williams.

“It was another great race for Dan, and a great race all-around for us,” said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian. “Steve Monsulick and Matt Dunlap ran their best races of the year.”

Monsulick (Kents Hill, Maine), a junior, was 17th overall, in 26:22.9, and Dunlap (Farmington, Maine), a sophomore, was 38th (26:53.5).

Rounding out Bates’ top seven were senior Matt Biggart (66th, 27:38.4), sophomore Andrew Percy (68th, 27:41.5), senior William Kenney (70th, 27:48.0) and sophomore Harrison Little (73rd, 28:07.6).

The ECAC Championships are up next for Bates, next Saturday at Connecticut College.
