HADLEY, Mass. — Bates College junior defensive end and sack artist Terence Ryan was named the Defensive Player of the Week by the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Sunday, for the league’s last week of football this season.
Ryan, a 6-5, 220-pound defensive end from Milton, Mass., made eight tackles, 2.5 of them for a loss, in Bates’ 34-20 victory at Hamilton College on Saturday.
Ryan also forced two fumbles and had two quarterback sacks, raising his league-high total to 10.5, the highest total the NESCAC has seen since Wesleyan’s Eric Mangini registered the same number in 1993. (Mangini is now the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.)
Ryan entered the weekend ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III in sacks per game, at 1.2.
