Squash teams warm up at Bowdoin’s annual Maine Open

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Bates College men’s and women’s squash teams had an impressive warmup for the coming 2005-06 season at the Maine Open over the weekend.

The tournament is an annual non-intercollegiate event held at Bowdoin College every fall, open to anyone who enters, and sophomore All-American Ricky Weisskopf won the tournament this year without dropping a game. The event is split into skill levels, with the top men’s flight being the 6.0 division.

In the 6.0 semifinals, Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador) played Will Carlin, from New York City, who writes a monthly column for Squash magazine and is a former US Men’s National Champion, in 1987. Weisskopf defeated Carlin 3-0. On Sunday, in the finals, Weisskopf met the defending champion, Boston’s Michael Semprucci, and Ricky prevailed 3-0,  with the individual game scores a lopsided 9-3, 9-1, 9-3.

It was the first Maine Open played by Weisskopf, who came to Bates last year in January.

Bates senior Peter Goldsborough (Falmouth, Mass.) won the men’s second division, over Bowdoin’s Zach Linhart in the finals.

Bates sophomore Caroline Lemoine (Natick, Mass.) won the top women’s flight, while Bates senior and No. 1 women’s player Melissa Lue Yen (Kingston, Jamaica) and Bates sophomore and No. 3 Charlotte Gerrish (Rye, N.Y.) played in the men’s draws.

Bates freshman Marc Taggart (Skippack, Pa.) won the men’s third division, over teammate Bates senior Guillermo Moronta (Cambridge, Mass.) in a five-game final.

“It was a great showing for Bates, and a great way to kick off the season,” head coach John Illig said of the event.
