Men’s squash team sweeps MIT in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates College men’s squash team registered a 9-0 sweep of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday in the Bobcats’ season opener.
Bates’ No. 1 player, sophomore All-American Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador downed MIT’s Duncan Ma (Hong Kong) by a 9-1, 9-2, 9-0 score to set the tone for the Bobcats.
At No. 2, sophomore Sean Wilkinson (London, England downed the Engineers’ Nadeem Mazen 9-5, 9-6, 9-0.
At No. 3, senior Jamie White (Summit, N.J.) defeated MIT’s Ashwan Deshpande (Andover, Mass.) 9-0, 9-0, 9-1.
Bates’ No. 4 player, senior Pete Goldsborough (Falmouth, Mass.) downed MIT’s J. Stounburg, 9-3, 9-4, 9-1.
First-year Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.) swept MIT’s Christopher Buenrostro (Lubbock, Texas) 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 at No. 5.
At No. 6, first-year Charlie Johnson (Atlanta) won 9-2, 9-0, 9-2, while at No. 7, first-year Marc Taggart (Skippack, Pa.) swept Saad Zaheer (Islamabad, Pakistan) 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. No. 8 senior Guillermo Moronta (Cambridge, Mass.) defeated MIT’s Jonathan Fu (Duluth, Ga.), and at No. 9, first-year Deacon Chapin (Cambridge, Mass.) downed David Baumgartner (Aitkin, Minn.), 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.
Sophomore Rob Munro (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Dmitri Russell (Princeton, N.J.) also scored exhibition victories for the Bobcats.
Bates resumes play Dec. 2 at Wesleyan University.
