Miley places first at indoor season-opening Bates Pentathlon
LEWISTON, Maine — Bates junior John Miley (Hanson, Mass.) placed first with a personal-best 3,243 points at the Bobcat indoor track and field team’s season-opening Bates Pentathlon on Saturday in Merrill Gymasium.
Miley’s was the second-best point total in school history, behind All-American decathlete Joe Northrup ’05, and it was a 39-point improvement over his previous best.
Miley placed ahead of teammates Andrew Tibbetts, a senior from Dedham, Mass., and junior Mike Canova (Topsfield, Mass.), who racked up 2,881 and 2,786 points, respectively. Tibbetts’ was the eighth-best performance in Bates history, and a 396-point improvement over his previous best. Canova’s was the ninth-best all-time Bates performance, in his first pentathlon.
All three Bobcats qualified for the New England Division III championships; Miley also qualified for the ECAC championships.
Miley finished first in three of the five events: the long jump (6.00 meters), the shot put (11.86 meters) and the 1,000-meter race (2:47.52). Tibbetts was first in the 55 hurdles (8.85 seconds), while Canova took first in the high jump (1.83 meters).
