Simpson College hands women’s basketball team its third straight loss
LAS VEGAS – The Bates College women’s basketball team lost its third consecutive game and dipped under the .500 mark with an 82-71 loss to Simpson College on Thursday in the D3 Desert Shootout, on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Simpson led by as many as 32 points in the first half and seized a commanding 55-26 lead by halftime, then held off Bates’ furious comeback attempt in the second period. The Bobcats had a 16-5 run to narrow the Storm’s lead to as few as 11 (80-69) with 2:55 to play. They held the Storm to seven field goals in the second half and outscored the Storm 45-27.
Katelyn Whiton led five players in double figures for the Storm (7-3) with 16 points and Simpson shot at a 63.6 percent clip (7-of-11) from three-point land. Whitney Franker (12 points), Carlie Beals (12), Tessa Van Oosbree (11) and Heather Kay (11) were also in double digits. Kay led Simpson with 12 rebounds and five assists.

Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.), who like Powers played in only her second game in a Bates uniform, added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Bates shot only 25.6 percent from the floor in the first half and 32.5 percent for the game, including 5-for-28 on 3-pointers (17.9 percent). The Bobcats limited the Storm to a .250 field goal percentage (7-for-28) in the second half, but the Storm still ended the game at .424.
