SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Jackie Powers and Matia Kostakis are both recent transfers to Bates College, and on Sunday they demonstrated the kind of positive impact they can have on Bates’ women’s basketball team.
Powers (Andover, Mass.) scored a game-high 19 points and Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds as Bates cruised past Springfield College 83-51 in the opening round of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic. Each player made her first start and played in her third game for the Bobcats.
Junior Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) added 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while sophomore Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) had nine points and nine assists for the Bobcats (5-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak. First-year forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points in her first game as a reserve.
Bates never trailed in the game, starting off with a pair of Kostakis hoops, both assisted by Barton, and from there jumping out to a 23-4 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. The Bobcats led 44-26 at the half and outscored the Pride 39-25 in the second period, led by Powers’ 11 points.
Courtney Parvin led the host Pride (5-4) with 13 points, Springfield’s only double-digit scorer. The Pride shot 34.5 percent on field goals for the game and committed 28 turnovers, while Bates shot 47.8 percent and gave the ball away 16 times.
Bates will play Trinity University of Texas Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the championship game of the tournament. Trinity defeated St. Lawrence University 78-61 in the opening round on Sunday.
