Bates men and women both victorious at Babson’s pool
WELLESLEY, Mass. — The Bates College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each came away victorious in their first road trip of the season Saturday at Babson College. The Bobcat men defeated the host Beavers 111-96, and the women were 130-98 winners.
Sophomore diver Dan Perry (Exeter, N.H.) won by convincing margins in both the 3-meter and 1-meter competitions. First-year Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine) highlighted the men’s swimming day with a personal-best 56.30 seconds in the 100 backstroke.
Senior John Bauer (Concord, Mass.) won the 100 freestyle, placed second in the 50 free and anchored the winning 200 free relay.
“We needed a close, fast meet to hel get us in the right mind-set for NESCACs and to justify all the hard work we’ve been putting in. And we got it,” said senior co-captain Fisher Qua (Cambridge, N.Y.).
For the women, senior co-captain Kate Gatti (Chelmsford, Mass.) dropped her time in the 100 freestyle for the third consecutive meet, breaking the 56-second mark with a 55.96 performance. Gatti also won the 200 freestyle and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Emilie Swenson (Old Saybrook, Conn.), sophomore Meghan Conley (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first-year Alexis Boyatsis (Dover, N.H.).
The Bobcat women were dominant in the distance events, first-year Bailey Johnson (Gardner, Mass.) winning the 1,000 freestyle by nearly 20 seconds and Boyatsis and Johnson finishing 1-2 in the 500 free.
