WATERVILLE, Maine — Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) had 21 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and three assists to lead the Bates College men’s basketball team to its eighth consecutive victory, a 66-55 decision over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The win made 4-0 this season in games against in-state league rivals Colby and Bowdoin, completing a rare CBB sweep. It’s the first time the sweep has been accomplished since Colby in the 1999-2000 season.
Stockwell helped Bates (11-2, 2-0 NESCAC) to a 46-27 rebound advantage. The Mules (6-9, 0-2 NESCAC) were playing without leading scorer and rebounder Drew Cohen, who leads NCAA Division III in blocked shots but missed the game because of a family commitment.
Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) added nine assists and six points for Bates, which went on a 16-6 run over the last 9:46 to turn a 49-48 lead into the 11-point victory. Stockwell had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the second half and helped spark the late run. Sean Cahill (Worcester, Mass.) added 12 points and Scott Place (Bridgewater, Mass.) had 10 for the Bobcats.
First-year guard Mackenzie Simpson (Casco, Maine) had a collegiate-high 22 points to lead the Mules. Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) added 15 points and four assists, while point guard Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo.) had seven assists and five points. Nate Dick (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished with nine points.
Colby has the week off before playing at Bowdoin in a NESCAC game next Saturday at 5 p.m. Bates will play host to St. Joseph’s College in a non-conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m.
