McKenna, Thompson head up Bates alpine skiers at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. — Bates College senior Sean McKenna (Manchester, N.H.) placed 13th to lead three Bobcats in the top 20 of the men’s slalom Saturday, helping propel the Bates ski teams to a sixth-place showing out of 15 squads at the Dartmouth College Winter Carnival.
McKenna had a combined time of 1:34.77 in two runs in the event. He was followed closely by Leo Menard (16th, 1:37.25) and Kevin Berry (19th, 1:39.08).
McKenna fared even better Friday in the giant slalom, tying for eighth place out of 58 finishers with the University of New Hampshire’s Joe Dunn, at 1:53.61. Dan Loman followed in 18th place, Menard was 28th, and Carter Casner was 34th.
First-year Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) led the Bates women’s alpine team in the slaom on Saturday, placing 11th out of 46 competitors with a two-run combined time of 1:40.91. Perry Kleeman was 18th overall for Bates, while Megan Papineau came in 33rd.
Sophomore Whitney Fahy (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) led the Bobcats in Friday’s giant slalom with a 12th-place combined time of 1:59.53. Papineau was close behind in 14th, and Kleeman came in 23rd.
Bates competes at the Williams College Carnival next weekend.
