LEWISTON, Maine — New England’s top male track and field athletes from Division III will converge on Bates College’s Walter Slovenski Indoor Track this weekend, as Bates hosts the 2007 New England Division III Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships. It will mark the eighth time Bates has hosted since the event began in 1980.
“This meet is a highly-charged, team-focused championship bringing together for the first and only time all the best teams and all the best individuals,” said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian, the meet’s director.
Athletes from 26 colleges will compete, beginning with the pentathlon on Friday and continuing with 20 other events on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
Favorites for the team title would include Williams College, Tufts University and MIT, while other teams, such as Bowdoin, Coast Guard, springfield, Trinity, Southern Maine and the host Bobcats, will also be big factors. Williams won the team title last season, the Ephs’ 13th, with Tufts coming in second and Bates grabbing third place.
Bates will look for big performances from its four team captains — senior Matt Capone (Auburn, Maine) in the 55-meter dash, the 200 and the 4×400 relay; junior Noah Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) in the 35-pound weight throw and the shot put; junior John Miley (Hanson, Mass.) in the pentathlon; and senior Sam Thomas (Richmond, Va.) in the 400 and the 4×400 relay.
“Bates is proud to serve as host and with the help of an outstanding officiating crew, we expect that this meet will be one of the best ever,” said Fereshetian.
