Bates women top Colby, will host NESCAC championships

BOX SCORE

Sarah Barton ’08 had 11 points and 10 assists for her second double-double of the season.

LEWISTON, Maine — The top-seeded Bates College women’s basketball used consistent defensive pressure to combat early scoring troubles and beat No. 8 Colby College 65-44 in a NESCAC playoff quarterfinal on Saturday.

The Bobcats (18-7) will host the NESCAC semifinals and finals next Saturday and Sunday, beginning with their semifinal matchup against No. 4 Williams (21-4). No. 2 Bowdoin will face No. 3 Wesleyan in the other semifinal.

Colby ends its season at 10-15.

Both teams struggled in the shooting department in the first half, and though Bates built a 23-12 lead 13 minutes into the game, Colby jumped back into the game with an 11-0 run that tied it up at 23. Katie McCabe and Kate Emery scored four points apiece in the run, and Regina Wohl capped it with a jumper with 1:29 left in the half.

A jumper by Annie Whiting and a runner before the buzzer by Maggie Fitzgerald gave Bates back the lead before the half, and buckets by Whiting and Matia Kostakis after intermission made it an 8-0 run. A 3-pointer by Sarah Barton answered a McCabe foul shot, and the Bobcats pushed the lead to 48-27 before Wohl canned a three to put an end to an 11-minute stretch that saw Bates outscore Colby 25-4.

McCabe scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds for Colby, which shot 29.8 percent from the field for the game. Emery grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and added seven points.

Meg Coffin led four Bobcats in double figures with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Barton scored 11 points to go with a game-high 10 assists and two blocked shots. Jackie Powers and Matia Kostakis scored 10 points apiece.

Bates rebounded from shooting 32.4 percent in the first half to shoot at a 47.1 percent clip in the second half. The Bobcats had an important edge in the turnover department, 12 to Colbys’ 20. Rebounding was nearly even, but Bates outperformed Colby on second-chance points 14-6.
