CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates College men’s track and field team continued its outstanding season by placing third out of 24 teams at the New England Division III indoor championships Saturday at MIT.
The Bobcats scored 62.5 points, behind only Williams (153) and Tufts (131), and five points ahead of fourth-place MIT.
“It was a great day,” said head coach Al Fereshetian. “Guys stepped up huge for us all over the place.”
Underscoring the Bobcats’ depth is the fact that they didn’t have the luxury of a first-place finisher in any event.
Standouts for Bates included:
- Senior Adam Macbeth, who placed second in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.74 seconds, a personal best and a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Macbeth also had season-best long jump of 21-10.25, good for fifth place.
- Sophomore Noah Gauthier, who was fifth in the shot put (49-7) and fourth in the 35-pound weight throw (56-8).
- Senior Joel Colony, who finished fifth in the 200 (22.81). Junior Matt Capone was eighth in 23.11.
- Junior Sam Thomas, who was third in the 600 (1:23.23).
- Bates’ 4×400 relay team of Macbeth, Colony, Thomas and Capone, which placed second in 3:23.55.
- Bates’ distance medley team of Andrew Percy, Sam Murphy, Mike Watson and C.J. Murray, whose fourth-place finish (10:38.46) pulled Bates even with MIT with only the 4×400 relay left.
- Sophomore Emmanuel Drabo, who placed fourth in the triple jump (44-2.25).
- First-year Jerome Bennett, who tied for fourth in the pole vault (13-6).
Some of the Bates men’s team will compete at the open-division Open New Englands next weekend at Boston University.
