Four Bobcats named to MWBCA All-State teams

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates junior Meg Coffin was named First Team All-State by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Monday, heading four Bates players honored by the MWBCA.

Sophomore guard Sarah Barton made the MWBCA All-State Second Team, while first-years Val Beckwith and Jackie Powers were both named to the All-Rookie Team.

Already named Player of the Year by the NESCAC, Coffin (Westford, Mass.) led the Bobcats in scoring (17.1), rebounding (11.0), blocked shots (1.6 bpg) and steals (2.3 spg). Coffin also set a new school record for field goal percentage, at .592, topping Olivia Zurek’s mark of .582 from 2002-03. The co-captain is also a two-time All-NESCAC and a second-team All-American as a soccer player, and starts for the lacrosse team as well.

Barton, a 5-9 point guard from Portsmouth, N.H., logged 137 more minutes on the floor than any other Bates player in 2005-06, and led the NESCAC in assists (7.1) and three-point shooting percentage (.419) while scoring 8.1 points per game. She ranked among the top five in Division III in assists, and was also among the top three players on the Bobcats in free throw percentage (.800), rebounding (4.6), steals (1.8) and blocked shots (0.6).

Beckwith, a 5-10 forward from Woburn, Mass., played 20.3 minutes per game for the Bobcats, starting nine games, and scored 8.0 points per contest while shooting .457 from the floor, second on the team. Beckwith also averaged 3.4 rebounds per game.

Powers, a 5-7 guard from Andover, Mass., ranked third on the team in scoring at 9.5 points per game, in addition to 2.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. She was named NESCAC Player of the Week on Jan. 3 and was MVP of the Springfield College Naismith Classic.
