NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Bates senior Adam Macbeth made the finals of the 55-meter hurdles race, with a preliminary heat time of 7.73 seconds on Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at St. Olaf College.
Macbeth (Ellsworth, Maine) will become an All-American in the event simply by finishing the race in Saturday’s final.
Also competing for the Bates men, sophomore Noah Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) finished 10th in the 35-pound weight throw at 57 feet, 0 inches, one place away from qualifying for the finals.
Macbeth has had hamstring problems over the past week, causing him to miss workouts.
“We’ve been really, really careful with him, and today he looked very loose,” said head coach Al Fereshetian. “He’s a senior, and he recognizes that this chance to prove yourself doesn’t come along very often. You have to take advantage of it, and he did that.”
Bates’ men’s 4×400 relay team of Macbeth, senior Joel Colony (Harrisville, N.H.), junior Matt Capone (Auburn, Maine) and junior Sam Thomas (Richmond, Va.) also competes on Saturday.
