Softball departs Florida after beating Norwich, losing to Wooster
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Bates College softball team finished up its season-opening trip to Florida on Saturday by splitting two games for the third time in three days. Bates defeated Norwich University 6-2 Saturday morning, before losing to the College of Wooster 9-6 in the afternoon.
Junior pitcher Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) limited Norwich to two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings of work to earn the win for Bates. Sophomore Kate Brown (Portland, Maine) mopped up with 1 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out one.
At the plate, junior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, and sophomore Beth Lakin (Tacoma, Wash.) was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior co-captain Lissa Moses (Hamden, conn.) was 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs and a stolen base, while first-year Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the loss to Wooster, senior co-captain Kyla Decato (Paris, Maine) had a huge game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs.
Despite Decato’s performance, Wooster won the game by coming back from a 5-3 deficit with three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
Masino, Bates’ third pitcher of the game, accepted the loss, pitching 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on two hits. First-year Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) started the game, going three innings and giving up three runs on six hits. Brown threw 1 2/3 innings of middle relief and also allowed three runs on three hits.
Franklin and junior Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) each hit triples for Bates in the game.
The Bobcats (3-3) next play a doubleheader at Brandeis University on Saturday, March 25.
