Bates pours on the offense in 25-10 women’s lacrosse win at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine — Senior Shannon Tully (Needham, Mass.) and sophomore Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored five goals to lead a powerful Bates College attack in a 25-10 non-conference women’s lacrosse victory over the University of New England Wednesday evening.

The win improves the Bobcats’ record to 3-1, while the Nor’easters (3-3) stand at the .500 mark.

After the two teams each notched a pair of goals in the first five minutes, Bates scored nine consecutive times over the next 10 minutes to take control of the match.  Wagner and junior Katherine Farmer (Madison, Conn.) had two goals apiece during the spurt.

The Bobats continued to pour it on en route to a 15-6 halftime advantage.  Bates outshot UNE 26-8 in the first frame.

Nine different players ended up scoring for the winners.  Sophomore Rachel Harmeling (North Reading, Mass.) came off the bench to net four goals, while Farmer added three.

Starting goalie Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) earned the win, allowing three goals in 18:38 of action.  First-year Katie Smarse (Lincoln, N.H.) relieved Nickerson and was credited with four stops.

Ashley MacDonald ’08 (Billerica, Mass.) led the Nor’easters with four goals.  Ashley Pellerin ’07 (Standish, Maine) and Megan Trusselle ’06 (South Berwick, Maine) contributed two goals apiece. 

Brittany Stratton ’09 (Bradford, N.H.) came up with 15 saves for UNE, which travels to Regis College on Friday.

Bates plays at Gordon College Thursday at 4 p.m.
