Softball team sweeps Colby to win six games in a row
Kristin Masino ’07
WATERVILLE, Maine — Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) pitched two complete games to lead the Bates College softball team to 2-1 and 6-3 wins over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Thursday at Crafts Field.
With its fifth and sixth straight wins, Bates improved to 12-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while Colby fell to 6-16 and 1-5 in the league.
Masino (10-4) allowed just three hits while striking out five and walking one in the opener. Colby pitcher Lauren Olmsted (Lexington, Mass.) was strong as well, with just one earned run and five strikeouts.
Colby had leads in both games, including 1-0 through five innings in the first game. The Mules scored one in the fourth when Kara Fagan (Arlington, Va.) led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Tory Starr (Dunbarton, N.H.).
Bates got both of its runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Kyla Decato (Paris, Maine) and Alex Bethel (Aspen, Colo.). The hits brought in Lissa Moses (Hamden, Conn.), after she led off with a double, and Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.), who had walked.
The Mules had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in the second game, but Masino was able to keep Bates in the game with a six-hitter and two strikeouts. First-year Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) belted a two-run home run, her team-high fourth of the season, in the seventh inning to give the Bobcats a three-run cushion at 6-3.
Decato went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Bobcats, while Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) and Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) both had two hits.
Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.) ripped a two-run homer in the first inning for Colby and Mollie Puskar (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had an RBI double to score Olmsted, who also had doubled.
Bates next plays Brandeis University and St. Joseph’s College of Maine Saturday at the Colby College Tournament.
