Hood, Worrall, Finan lead Bobcats to doubleheader sweep at Colby
WATERVILLE, Maine — Sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) and senior Adam Worrall (Duxbury, Mass.) each hit home runs as the Bates College baseball team took an 11-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader in NESCAC East Division play Saturday at Coombs Field. Bates (9-11, 3-6 NESCAC) also took a 9-2 victory in the second game.
Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) had two hits and two RBIs in the second game for the Bobcats. Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) scored three runs and Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) had two hits.
Bates starting pitcher Ben Shwartz (Mattapoisett, Mass.) pitched the first seven innings of the second game for the victory, allowing only one run on six hits and two walks while striking out three. First-year Ben Thayer (Gorham, Maine) allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief, and sophomore Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) got the final two outs for the Bobcats.
Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn.) had three hits in the second game for Colby (7-15, 2-7).
Bates junior Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.) pitched a complete-game three-hitter for the Bobcats in the opener, allowing only one earned run, walking two and striking out one.
Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) and Mahoney both had two hits and three RBIs in the opener for Bates, which collected 11 hits as a team. Hood finished with three hits.
Tyler Hales (Lexington, Mass.) had two hits and Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) had an RBI double for Colby.
