Bates crew hosts, wins CBB Regatta on Androscoggin River
LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College crew won six of nine races to take home the 2006 Presidents’ Cup with 21 points Sunday at the CBB Regatta on the Androscoggin River. Colby College was second with 16 points, followed by Bowdoin with nine.
The CBB regatta featured 8+ and 4+ events in the men and women’s varsity and novice categories, with each event scoring points equally toward the Cup. Following up a tough day of racing against Trinity, WPI, and UNH in Worcester the day before, the Bobcats truly rose to the occasion and stole the show, winning the Cup for the first time since 2000.
Bates won two of the four point-scoring varsity events, with victories in the men’s 8+ and the women’s 4+. In the first race of the day, the Bates men’s 8+ beat the Colby men’s 8+ by over 15 seconds, posting the fastest time of the day amongst all crews in 6:13.3. The women’s varsity 4+ crossed the line in 7:52.7, 8 seconds ahead of the 2nd place Colby crew and over 17 seconds ahead of both Bowdoin crews. The Bates women’s 8+ finished second to the nationally-ranked Colby 8+, posting a time of 7:17.2 to Colby’s 7:11.3. In the men’s 4+ race, featuring Bowdoin’s top-ranked crew, the Bates men finished fourth. In the women’s 2V 8+ event, which did not score points toward the Cup, the Bates women finished second to the Colby 2V.
Bates was victorious across the board in the novice events, winning every race by open water over opponents. The Bates novice men won the 4+ event with a time of 7:13.7 over crews from Colby and Bowdoin, and won the 8+ with a time of 6:24.0, 16 seconds ahead of the lone Colby crew. The Bates novice women won the 4+ event with a time of 7:57.3, beating two Bowdoin novice crews and 1 Colby crew. The women won the 8+ in a time of 7:28.0, over 20 seconds ahead of the Colby novice 8+.
