Bates crew registers one first place, two seconds at Pittsfield
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Bates College rowers traveled to Pittsfield, Mass., this weekend to face off against NESCAC opponent Williams College, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Division I Marist. Tufts joined the mix on the men’s side, with entries in the Varsity 8+ events.
The Marist men proved to be the team to beat, with first place finishes in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd varsity 8+ events. Bates fielded 1st and 2nd varsity 8+s, and placed fourth and fifth in each event, respectively. The 1V boat posted a time of 6:27.2 in its early morning heat to qualify for the Petite Final, in which Bates beat the Tufts 1V but was edged by the Marist 2V.
The Novice Men brought home the sole victories of the day, beating a fast Marist Novice 8+ by less than a second and placing first in the Novice 4+ event.
On the women’s side, the Williams women backed up their No. 1 national ranking with wins in every event, exposing the Bates crews to some of the speed that they’ll be facing next weekend at the New England Championships in Worcester. In the 1V 8+ event, the Bates women finished 3rd, posting a time of 7:21.5, less than 10 seconds off the Williams time. Bates beat USCGA by a length and lost to second-place Marist by less than a second.
In the 2V event, the Bates women finished 3rd in their closest race of the season, ahead of Coast Guard and behind Marist and Williams. In the Novice 8+ event, Bates finished 2nd, behind the Williams boat and well ahead of the crews from Coast Guard and Marist.
The Bates team races next at the New England Championships on Sunday, May 7 in Worcester, Mass.
