WORCESTER, Mass. — The Bates men’s and women’s crews competed at the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships on an exceedingly rainy Saturday and Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond. Bates finished eighth out of 44 participating schools and was the fourth NESCAC school.
The Bates 1st varsity women’s 8+ placed second in Saturday’s heat to qualify for one of two top-level semifinals on Sunday morning. The women placed fourth in the semifinal, just missing qualification for the grand final. They finished the day strong, though, winning the Petite Final in a time of 6:47.7 and topping Ohio State, Mount Holyoke, New Hampshire, Holy Cross, and William Smith to place seventh overall at the regatta.
The Bates 1st varsity men’s 8+ placed 5th in their heat on Saturday, out of contention for a spot in the Grand Final. They went on to qualify for the third-level final, where they placed third, behind Orange Coast and University of Massachusetts and ahead of Cincinnati, WPI, and Ohio State. This finish put the Bates men at 15th overall, in a field that included powerhouses Michigan, Trinity, George Washington, University of Virginia, and Holy Cross.
The novice squads rose to the occasion once again, as both the novice women and men qualified for the Grand Finals with first- and second-place finishes in their heats, respectively. The novice women went on to win a bronze, finishing 5 seconds behind gold-medalist Williams. The novice men placed sixth overall, behind Trinity, UC-San Diego, Orange Coast, Michigan, and George Washington.
