Bates women finish fifth out of 47 teams at ECAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Senior Keelin Godsey won first place in the hammer throw and shot put, and was runner-up in the discus throw, leading the Bates College women’s track and field team to fifth place out of 47 scoring teams at the ECAC Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Springfield College.

The Bobcats scored 44 points, finishing behind only SUNY Oneonta (67), Lincoln University (53.50), SUNY Cortland (53) and Ithaca College (47).

Godsey won the shot put in 45 feet, 1.5 inches and the hammer throw with a toss of 201 feet, 11 inches, and he finished second to Richard Stockton College’s Audra Schappell in the discus throw, at 141-04.

Combining for nine more of Bates points were junior pole vaulters Laura Golitko (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Julie Shelkey (Conway, Mass.), who both vaulted 10 feet and 4.25 inches, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Bates 4×400 relay team of senior Kathleen Nugent (Buxton, Maine), senior Danielle Touhey (Franklin, Mass.), first-year Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) and senior Ashley Wentworth (North Andover, Mass.) finished in fourth place in 4:02.52.

Alexander finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles, scoring two more points for the Bobcats.

Godsey and junior Kathryn Moore will compete at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships next weekend at Benedictine University in Illinois.
