First-year players power volleyball team to 2-0 start

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Bates College volleyball team didn’t finish play until 15 minutes before midnight on Friday night, but it was all well worth it. Infused with big contributions from four first-year players, as well as senior setter Katie Graeff (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior MB/OH Jenn Linton (Redding, Conn.), Bates defeated UMass-Boston 3-1 in its opening match of the Cobblestone Inn Invitational Volleyball Tournament at Plymouth State University, then edged Western New England College in five sets for a 2-0 start.
The Bobcats put down UMass-Boston (1-1) by winning three straight sets after dropping the first one, 17-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-19. Linton had 10 kills in the match while Graef added 29 assists. Meanwhile, first-years Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.), Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) came through. Leberman, an outside hitter, collected nine kills and eight digs, while libero/defensive specialist Johnston had 10 digs and OH/RS Edmonson had eight kills and seven digs.
Bates then outlasted WNEC 30-25, 30-27, 20-30, 27-30, 17-15 behind 40 assists and 11 digs by Graeff, eight kills and 20 digs by Edmonson, 19 kills and nine digs from Leberman, and 12 kills from Linton. Also coming up big was first-year outside hitter Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.), who tallied 16 kills in the match.
The Bobcats have two more matches to play on Saturday in Plymouth, against Lasell at 1 p.m. and Mount Ida at 3 p.m.
