BANGOR, Maine — A goal by Kim Alexander in the 54th minute of play gave the Bates College women’s soccer team a 1-0 season-opening victory at in-state foe Husson College on Monday.
Alexander (Cumberland, Maine), a two-time All-NESCAC senior forward, put a ball past Husson goalie Leah Drew (Caribou, Maine) 53:11 into the game to hand the Eagles (2-1-1) their first loss of the season. Assisting on the score was senior forward Jessie Gargiulo (Boxborough, Mass.).
Bates (1-0) is ranked No. 10 in this week’s D3Kicks.com Top 25 women’s soccer poll.
The game was scoreless in the first half but Bates controlled much of the play. Drew faced a constant attack from the Bobcats, facing 16 shots while making 9 saves in the first half. The first chance came off of a serve from Elise Kornack (Dover, Mass.) and the second came moments later alone right in front of the net. Drew turned both shots away to keep the game scoreless.

Bates next plays at St. Joseph’s College on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. The Bobcats’ first home game will be on Saturday, Sept. 23 against Connecticut College.
