Schuler, Cox lead golf team at state championship

VASSALBORO, Maine — First-year Kurt Schuler and junior Jake Cox led Bates College’s golf team to an eighth-place finish out of 13 teams at the Maine Intercollegiate Golf Championship, hosted by Thomas College at Natanis Golf Course.

The Bobcats totaled 347 after the first day of the tournament on Friday, and fired a 345 on Saturday. Their two-day score of 692 was lower than Maine Maritime, Colby, UMaine-Presque Isle, Southern Maine C.C. and Eastern Maine C.C. Husson College won the event with a two-day score of 614.

Schuler (Jackson, N.H.) shot a 78 on Friday and Cox (Sammamish, Wash.) carded an 82. Sophomore Jeremy Rogalski (West Springfield, Mass.) was Bates’ third-lowest scorer with a 90, followed by a 97 by junior newcomer Will Randi (Garden City, N.Y.).

The team was more tightly packed on Saturday, but Schuler again led the Bobcats with an 84, followed by Rogalski with an 86, Cox with an 87 and sophomore Tom Bowden (Falmouth, Maine) with an 88.

Bates resumes play on Sunday, Sept. 24 at the Colby Classic.
