GRAFTON, Mass. — Senior Kathryn Moore finished fourth overall to lead the Bates College women’s cross country team to a strong effort at the Tufts Jumbo Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

With 74 points, the Bobcats finished third behind nationally ranked Tufts (29) and Amherst (34), and ahead of Fitchburg State (120).

Moore (Pelham, N.H.), an All-American steeplechase runner, covered the 6K course in 22:41. Behind her were junior Molly Balentine (Hampden, Maine) in 17th overall, at 23:37, junior Aviva Goldstein (Manchester, N.H.) in 19th, at 23:48, and first-year Esther Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario) in 20th, at 23:52.

Rounding out Bates’ top seven were first-year Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) in 22nd place (24:00), senior Emily Williams (Harvard, Mass.) in 25th (24:36) and first-year Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) in 26th, at 24:49.

“I thought we did a good job in that kind of competition,” said head coach Jay Hartshorn. “We had a really tight, good pack from two to five. Overall we were a lot more aggressive (than last week at the Bates Invitational).”

The Bobcats next compete at Open New Englands at Franklin Park in Boston on Oct. 7.
