Powerful Jeffs sweep Bates in volleyball, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. — The Amherst women’s volleyball team defeated visiting NESCAC rival Bates College 3-0 Sunday to improve to 16-1 (4-1 NESCAC), dropping Bates to 10-11 (1-3 NESCAC) on the season.
The Bobcats hung with Amherst in the first game, but the Jeffs never trailed after breaking away from a 9-9 tie early in the game, to win 30-23. Amherst led the entire way in the second game to a 30-19 victory. Bates hung again with Amherst in the third game, but after a timeout call with the Jeffs winning 21-18, Amherst finished strong and pulled away for a 30-19 victory.
Senior Katie Graeff (Chevy Chase, Md.) had 22 assists and two service aces for Bates. First-year Liz Leberman led the way in kills with six, while first-year Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) added four. Junior Jenn Linton (Redding, Conn.) came up with six blocks.
Senior co-captain Kristin Quinn led the attack for Amherst, finishing the day with 13 kills and no errors.
Bates will host Bowdoin Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the fourth meeting between the teams, and their first conference matchup.
