Grissa, Harris reach singles quarterfinals at NEWITT Championship

NORTHAMPTON and SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — Multiple singles victories by Bates junior Cecilia Grissa and senior Laura Harris highlighted the Bobcats’ women’s tennis team’s weekend at the Division III New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, hosted by Smith, Mount Holyoke and Amherst colleges.

Bates junior Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, Pa.) won two matches in the No. 1 singles flight at Mount Holyoke College, beating Caitlyn Leone of Roger Williams 6-4, 6-2, then coming back to down Babson’s Courtney Farrell 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 before losing to Bowdoin’s Sarah D’Elia in the quarterfinal round, 6-3, 6-1.

Senior Laura Harris (Mercer Island, Wash.) provided another Bates highlight in the No. 4 singles flight, beating Katie Knies of Wheaton (Mass.) 6-0, 6-0, then defeating Emily Weisberger of Brandeis 6-1, 6-1, before being eliminated from the flight by Bowdoin’s Christine D’Elia 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 5 singles, junior Liz Fleming (Weston, Conn.) defeated Roger Williams’ Kim Spencer 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16, then bowed out of the quarterfinal round to Middlebury’s Amy Berkman, 6-1, 6-0.

Bates first-year Lindsey Scherer (Carmel, Ind.) outlasted Colby’s Nicole Veilleux in the Round of 16 of the No. 6 singles flight, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, then was beaten by Annie Schneidman of Williams, 6-1, 6-0.

Results elsewhere for Bates included sophomore Caryn Benisch (Huntington, N.Y.) bowing out of the round of 16 at No. 2 singles by a 6-0, 6-4 score against Amherst’s Brittany Berkces. Competing at No. 3 singles, first-year Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) was defeated by Smith’s Kate Johnson in the first round, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Grissa and Harris were beaten in the Round of 16 by the Amherst duo of Menezes and Berckes, 8-3. And in the No. 3 doubles flight, Fleming and sophomore Laura Will (Milton, Mass.) lost to Colby’s duo of Veilleux and DeSherbinin, 8-4.
