Bates crews impress at 42nd Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates College rowing crews made strong showings over the weekend at the 42nd Head of the Charles Regatta. Bates entered four boats, including entries in the Collegiate Men’s Eight and Collegiate Women’s Eight fields, where the Bobcats were particularly impressive.
In the Collegiate Men’s Eight, Bates came in at 15:59.121, which was 15th best out of 58 boats overall, and fifth among Division III college crews, beating out such rivals as Colby (18th), Rochester (27th), Washington University (28th) and Ithaca (30th). Bates’ time was only 5.6 percent off of the winning time of 15:08.301, held by Western Rowing Club.
In the Collegiate Women’s Eight division, Bates finished 13th overall out of 57 boats, with a time of 17:55.737, only 4.91 percent off of Yale University’s winning mark of 17:05.343. Bates was third among American Division III schools, and ahead of rivals like Colby (15th), Tufts (16th), Trinity (18th), William Smith (21st) and Hamilton (25th).
Bates also had entries in Men’s Club Eight and Women’s Club Eight divisions. The men’s club eight was 39th out of 58 boats overall, at 17:50.497. The women’s club eight came in 24th out of 51 boats, at 20:15.254.
Bates’ crews will be at the CBB Regatta this Saturday, Oct. 28, at Colby.
