SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Co-captains Steve Monsulick and Matt Dunlap each finished among the top 25 runners, leading Bates College to 12th place out of 45 teams at the New England Regional Men’s NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, held Saturday at Springfield College.
With 288 points, the Bobcats came out behind Southern Maine (238) and Coast Guard (257), but ahead of Colby (319), Connecticut College (319), Keene State (348) and Springfield (383).
“We had a couple of really good performances, but we were a little bit off today other than that,” said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian.
Monsulick (Kents Hill, Maine), finished 21st out of 309 competitors, covering the 8-kilometer course in 26:22.9. Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) was close behind in 25th place, at 26:26.9, earning praise from Fereshetian for his best race of the season.
First-year Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) also had an excellent race, coming in third for Bates with a 69th-place time of 27:21.6. He was followed by classmates Dylan McGuffin (Northfield, N.H.) in 80th and Conor Welch (Newburyport, Mass.) in 93rd.
Juniors Harrison Little (Hanover, N.H.) and Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.) rounded out Bates’ top seven runners, in 113th and 182nd place, respectively.
With Monsulick and Dunlap narrowly missing out on bids for the NCAA Championships, this ends the season for the Bobcats.
