Drake, Lamdin, Berry shine in swim team’s first meet

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Bates College swimming and diving teams opened their 2006-07 seasons with a dual meet at Wesleyan University on Saturday, with the women losing by a 162-117 team score and the men falling by a 175-82 score.
Highlights for the women included first-year Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio), who was victorious in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. Drake swam a finals time of 1:04.03 in the 100, beating out the Cardinals’ Caitlin Bethlahmy by 0.44 seconds, and 2:18.85 in the 200, where she topped Bethlahmy by 0.68 seconds.

Sophomore diver Kelsey Lamdin (Brunswick, Maine), a two-time All-America performer in her first year, picked up where she left off with victories in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, with 205.74 and 237.98 points, respectively. Lamdin qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1-meter event.
On the men’s side, sophomore Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine) won the 100-yard backstroke, topping Wesleyan’s Will Hasty by over three seconds with a finals time of 56.35 seconds. Berry also took first in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.86, beating out Wesleyan’s Chris Becker by 5.99 seconds.
Bates will compete at Trinity College on Dec. 2 at 1 p.m.
