Men’s squash team beats Tufts, loses at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. — The Bates College men’s squash team opened the 2006-07 season by splitting a pair of matches at Dartmouth College, losing to the host Big Green 8-1 but defeating Tufts University 6-3.
Two-time All-American Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador) won the Bobcats’ lone point against Dartmouth, beating his opponent by a 9-5, 7-9, 9-2, 9-2 score, although there were only three positions in which the Big Green won in straight games.
“We fought extremely hard, but they’re a talented team with three Canadians and one Bermudan,” said Bates coach John Illig. “It is a let-down, as we’d thought we had a chance to play closer against them, but we have 25 matches ahead of us, and we have to put this one behind us.”
Bates first-year players Kush Mahan (Gainesville, Fla.) and Jordan Greenberg (Malvern, Pa.) played at the Nos. 3 and 5 spots, respectively, against Tufts and registered their first collegiate wins. Also winning for the Bobcats (1-1) were Weisskopf, junior Sean Wilkinson (London, England), senior Gary Kan (Hong Kong) and sophomore Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.).
“We were not on top form, but were able to come away with the win,” said Illig. “It’s going to be a great year filled with close battles, as many teams in the league are vastly improved and great parity exists among the strong teams from Navy, Cornell, Brown, Bowdoin, Denison, F&M, Amherst, Tufts and U. Rochester.”
Bates will host MIT on Dec. 8 at 6:45 p.m. in the final match of the fall semester.
